Description

The goal of this project is to develop a synchronized traffic signal system that can be used to synchronize the traffic signals at the junctions in the metropolitan cities wherein the green signal given at one traffic junction is maintained at consecutive junctions through serial communication. Vehicles getting the green signal at one junction move through the subsequent junctions as the green signals are maintained throughout different junctions. Traffic congestion is a major problem in several metropolitan cities. Controlling traffic using outdated methods and subjecting oneself to traffic jams have become synonymous as hoards of vehicles being stranded in heavy traffic is a bitter experience for all of us. This proposed system is enhanced to control the traffic using multiple microcontrollers. They communicate with each other via serial communication. The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 families and a rectified power supply. The number of LEDs interfaced to the microcontroller represents the traffic light signals. Each microcontroller is responsible for one particular junction. If the vehicles are assumed to travel at a particular speed on the junction, then the traffic signals are changed based on the program. If the vehicle once gets the green signal at one junction, the same signal will be maintained on the other consecutive junctions as well, by an interrupt concept used in the microcontroller. The major advantage of adopting this technology is that there is no need for any centralized body to monitor the direction of traffic flow. As human involvement is negligible, there will be little scope for human error. Hence, this approach is beneficial for the government and local authorities facing financial constraints as they can’t spend money on costly cameras and software.
